Achieving high search engine ranking
Once you have identified your target keywords you will need to put some effort into achieving favorable ranking with search engines, i.e. getting your site up in the search results for selected keywords. There are two groups of factors that affect your site's search engine position - on-page factors and off-page factors.
Off-page factors
Off-page factors, as the name implies are those factors that affect your search engine rankings but are not directly within your control.
The main off-page factor is external links. Generally the more the links the better. The more relevant the pages that are linking to you to the topic on your website the better. The higher ranking of the page that is linking to you the better. Google has invented a so-called PageRank, which basically serves as a popularity ranking of any particular page. It depends on the number of external and internal pages linking to a page in question and a PageRank of each of the linking pages. Page rank is on scale from 1 - 10 (or not rated). PageRank is not keyword specific. It is only an indication of popularity. There are numerous discussions on the web on SEO forums regarding how important is PageRank for a high ranking in SERPs. My opinion it doesn't hurt, but it is definitely not the ultimate. It is like a chicken and an egg - what comes first popularity or PageRank. Most of pages that rank well will have a decent PageRank and vice versa.
Now, here is something you should also know. By some Google is believed to have a sandbox. A sandbox is where you site is kept until it earns credibility. The more competitive the keyword, the higher the chance of getting into the sandbox and the longer you will stay there.
How to monitor performance/results of your SEO - check number of indexed pages, check whether pages on your site appear in SERPs at all. Then start evaluating how well they are ranking for your target keywords.
On-page factors
On-page factors are those factors that are on your website and which are directly within your control. While it may be obvious, you must understand that each page on your website must be linked. If you have submitted your main page to a search engine (or some other website is linking to the main page of your website) you MUST make sure that the main page is linked to other pages and those pages have links to other pages, etc. If you have a page on your website that has no back links from other pages it will never be seen by search engines and you will be pretty much the only person aware of its existence (which doesn't help the main idea of generating traffic).
